Moving to London with a dog soon? I thought today I’d deviate from my usual logistical advice to talk about something a little more fun. If you expect to be settled into your new pet-friendly London apartment soon and are looking to step out with your pooch, here are some events going on now and coming up in the next few months.
Moving to London with a Dog – What’s On in London This Week
There’s quite a bit going on this weekend already if you’re moving to London with a dog as I type or have already done so. The Animal Art Fair just kicked off this past Wednesday and continues through Sunday at Riverside Walkway on London’s Southbank (see www.animalartfair.com for more info). Also on Sunday the 20th is the Dulwich Park Fair from 12-6pm (including live music and family-friendly entertainment including a dog show), and Bark Britain (a sponsored dog walk in support of the Animal Cancer Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support – to get involved, email barkbritain@hotmail.co.uk). If you aren’t moving to London with a dog in time to make these events (understandable – I’m giving you pretty last-minute notice :)), no worries, because there’s more stuff yet to come.
Moving to London with a Dog – What’s On in London Through June
If you’re moving to London with a dog by June of this year, there’s some summer fun in store for you and other pet lovers. Already going on now through the end of June is the “A Terrier’s Tale – the Manchester Terrier through History” exhibit at the Kennel Club Art Gallery in honor of the British Manchester Terrier Club’s 75th anniversary. Through 27 June, you can also get a guided tour of the Kennel Club to learn what it’s all about as it continues its mission of aiding the UK’s dogs and their wellbeing. See www.thekennelclub.co.uk/artgallery for more information on both of these opportunities.
On June 2nd, Norwood Park (www.friendsofnorwoodpark.co.uk) is holding a dog show featuring the following categories: Best in Show, Dog’s Got Talent/Best Trick, Cutest Puppy, Golden Oldie, Luckiest Rescue, Waggiest Tale, and Fancy Dress (royal-themed costumes, how awesome is that?). Battersea Dogs & Cats Home will be providing free tag engraving, training, and even microchips (although, if you’re moving to London with a dog, your pet will have already required a microchip to relocate to the UK) , and the first twenty dogs present win a free collar and leash! June 10th is a “Summer Fun Day” hosted by the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Harefield, and there are more dog shows to follow mid-month: the Hanwell Carnival Dog Show on 16 June (www.hanwellcarnival.co.uk) and Parks Police Dog Show in Battersea Park the following day on 17 June.
Moving to London with a Dog – What’s On in London Thereafter
There will surely be even more events scheduled in the coming months, but yet to come in case you aren’t moving to London with a dog until July is the Brockwell Park Fun Dog Show on July 15th and Chiswick House Dog Show on September 23rd.
So if you’re moving to London with a dog, rest assured, you and your canine companion will never get bored here with all the pet-friendly festivities already going on this summer!
